not the game, exactly .... I mean I wasn't exactly hooked by what little I did play when I gave it a shot about a year ago, but it's not like I hated it.

I HATE people calling it "megaten," that has got to be one of the worst butchering of a Japanese phrase for the sake of Americanization I've heard.

megaten hasn't got a damned thing to do with anything relating to the actual meaning of "Shin Megami Tensei" (or "Megami Tensei"), normally I just leave it alone and walk off but this one really bugs me. I mean it's not like "SMT" is MORE complicated to say when it comes to abbreviations, and "Shin Megami Tensei" sounds cooler, and more dramatic, and ..... what the hug: Megaten?!?!?! god that is so horrible, it sounds like something a pro baseball announcer would nick name a Japanese player to save themselves the trouble of actually learning how to say the name right.

(ok, now that I have that out of my system I can crawl back into my cave and inwardly fume)

(*edit* changed "aberrations" -> "abbreviations" .... oops!)

People abbreviate long names. It happens. I have no idea where the "Megaten" nickname came from, but it certainly didn't start with this online game. I personally use "SMT" over "Megaten", but I don't see the point in getting upset or annoyed at "Megaten" being used. At the very least, it's what Aeria called this game for years, so it'd be silly of Atlus to try and change it now. You're gonna have to deal.

yeah, I know .... normally I just roll my eyes and move on, but this one has always bugged the hell out of me since it's neither significantly less complicated (the root of most abbreviation) or sounds cooler than the full title (as is the case with most MMO nicknames like WOW or WAR or L2).

it's like if someone decided to nick name Pandora Saga "Pan Sag" and frankly it reeks of some western PR rep being too lazy to memorize the spelling for "Megami Tensei."

I've heard people call Shin Megami Tensei games outside of IMAGINE "MegaTen" before. It's not unique to this game.
I wasn't fond of the shortening the first few times I've heard it, but after I joined the IMAGINE community, I caught myself occasionally using it. You get used to it.

Yeah, "MegaTen" is an abbreviation used for the franchise overall, and as far as I can tell, dates back to the beginning of the franchise in the 80s. Although according to a quick google search, it seems that Imagine has become rather connected with the "Megaten", ever since Aeria made it a more official abbreviation.

I suppose megaten is easier then SMT. The Shin part is ok but since you also have Majin Tensei which abriviated is the same as megami tensei, that would be weird. So I think that is why megaten is more commonly used.

Except, even Japanese people do this. Y'know, the people who invented the language.

They abbreviate things just as much as we do with English. Hell, they abbreviate Monster Hunter to モンハン (monhan, an abbreviation that's rarely, if ever, used in the West, I might add.), and that's just one example of many.

And your signature is wrong. If you're going to hyphenate it by syllable, it should be "me-ga-mi te-n-se-i". That's seven syllables, Ace. Even if you're going by a more English pronunciation, "megami" is still three syllables.

In other words, suck it.

actually, Japanese people, in general, have a tendency to abbreviate for texts/online forums and such.
They do so via using the first 2 characters within certain grouping of words, so from the two words of Megami and Tensei in Shin ・ Megami Tensei: Imagine Online.
megami(めがみ) tensei(てんせい)=MEGATEN(メガテン)

Where this info comes from:
From the many, many years that I have been studying the Japanese language.

But you are entitled to your own opinion. I just wanted to let you know that the shorten name for Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine online is not really a western concept.

I still think Mega1O is the best way to call it. Period.

I need to point out that the JAPANESE WEBSITE for Megaten is MEGATENonline.com NOT ShinMegamaiTenseionline.com.

My main gripe about "MegaTen" is that the game is supposedly titled "Imagine" and if "MegaTen" can refer to the series as a whole, then saying "I'm going to play MegaTen." says only so much. And there's really no point having the name "Imagine" if you're not going to use it. lol

You're free to have your opinions, but please do not state them as facts, SogiYa. It makes you sound like some kind of ignorant weeaboo when you say "It's wrong because it's not what the japanese do."... especially when it IS what the japanese do.

Remember, you never doubt the main character.

Look at that post count.

Just look at it.

Spam that inbox full of questions about their daily life.

On-topic: Megaten is an accepted shortening for the series, seeing as a quick google would show. Major reputable sites, along with ATLUS themselves are using it. Telling the owner of the creative rights that they are wrong is insane.

I'm not quite sure how to take that... but it's true people should never doubt me. I'm always right, even when wrong.
